2/1/08 – AA Notes - catalyst for emergence of Chinese hand laundry alliance o CCBA required taxes/extra charges/etc. o Make an alliance to better represent the group o Reaction to CCBA CCBA was creating in reaction to exclusion law Many laundry men felt it wasn’t representing their own interest o Proposed ordinance in NY that targeted Chinese laundry men 25$ license fee and 1000 dollar security bond for all public laundry If operate laundry service must be American o CHLA felt CCBA was oppressive organization Were experiencing double oppression Against broader American society Forces within their own community against their interests o Chinese laundrymen challenged authority and hierarchy in their own communities Challenged the power and prestige of the CCBA - Futility to culture argument that has dominated our understanding of AA groups o Culturally Asians considered passive and submissive o Unwilling to question/challenge tradition and authority - Because of institutional racism, Chinese elite were able to transfer hierarchies in U.S. - CHLA stood up against those they considered to be oppressive within their own community o Within a month had 2000 members o Achieved a major victory by getting lower license fee (10$) and security
