POLI 100 – Lecture Notes Lecture #14 - The Campaign For Congress: How It Looks to the Candidate Feel of Congressional campaigns o About retail politics Going out and meeting people where they live o TV ads are inefficient Most cover several congressional districts Issues o National issues, pretty much none o Local issues tend to revolve around discussion of ‘was he a carpetbagger’ etc Our image of campaigns o Crowds of supporters and opponents o Pack of reporters o Busy headquarters Reality of Congressional Campaigns o No political events, as people will not attend them o No press o No workers, only a few volunteers mostly high school aged or retired What is the campaign itself like? o Very hard work, 14 hour days under pressure o Not exciting, no ‘news’ happens o Constant turmoil, emotionally exhausting, unanticipated problems Campaigns are amateur organizations and are temporary Never have enough time to work out all the bumps Same speeches 5-6 times per day
