Advantages o Behaviors are spontaneous o Doesn’t rely on self-reports o We can’t manipulate everything – good alternative to lab session Disadvantages o Interference – invasion of participants natural way o Some interesting behaviors are very rare o Observer bias (interrater reliability)- see what you want to see o Time consuming o Invasion of privacy Correlational methods Describe the relationship between multiple variables in the world Correlation – the extent to which two or more variables are related to each other Correlation coefficient – statistic that assesses how well you can predict one variable from another (r) R tells us strength and direction runs between – and + 1 Correlation is not causation o Reverse causality problem A could cause B B could cause A o Third variable problem Variable C could be causing A and B Advantages o Can study problems in which intervention/experimentation is impossible (gender, culture, personality types)
