Impression management – how we manage over time presenting who we are o Self-presentation –most of the time, we want to make ourselves look good 6 strategies of self-presentation Instrumental goals o Ingratiation o Intimidation o supplication Expressive goals o Self-promotion and self-handicapping When we engage in actionst hat produce obstacles to success so we have an excuse when we fial (defensive attributions) Ex: staying up all night before a test o Exemplification o Status and power o Self-monitoring – the degree one regulate their behavior to match the situation High SM Low SM Cognitive Dissonance Cognitive dissonance – feeling of discomfort caused by performing an action that threatens our self-image (inconsistent with our beliefs/attitudes) o Dissonance is motivation – we are motivated to avoid feeling dissonance
