What is social psyc? o Definition: the scientific study of the ways in which people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, are influenced by the real or imagined presence of other people Guided by empirical evidence – follows the scientific method Social influence – how others and the environment effects an individual’s behaviors and thoughts Studies show the way one behaves/thinks/feels can be influenced by the imagined presence of someone (yours parents don’t have to be with you, to affect your behavior) Impression formation – are you a good judge of character? What cues do you use to determine whether you like someone? Self-presentation – how you present yourself, what tactics do we use to make impressions on others Attitudes and persuasion – does sex really sell? Relationships – why do we like some ppl and dislike others? Love – what is the best way to meet the love of your life Prosocial behavior/helping – why is worse to be attacked on a busy street
