Mechanisms of visual attention o Overt and covert o Eye movments are overt – gaze direction generally indidicates focus of attention o Covert attended – we can attend targets w/o looking at them and by the same token we can look at targets w/o attending to them o Intersest – we select or notice those targets that are personally relevant Studying eye movemnts Eye-trackers – video record eye position and determine position of some reference point (a felection of light from the eyeball) that moves as the eye moves Series of rests and jumps – not smooth Areas of contrast capture attention, tend not to look at areas that are homogenous What determines where we look in a scene? o Stimulus salience – exogenous factors, properties of the scene itself that capture attention regardless of goal Contrast Color Contour o Cognitive factors Nature of viewers task Viewer fixates objs relevant to taks Fizations synchroniazed with intended actions
