The independent variable is the number of hours and the dependent variable is the amount of money. Let x = the number of hours worked and let y = the amount of money Lisa received. The set of ordered pairs {(1, 15), (2, 30), (3, 45), (4, 60), (5, 75)} can be used to represent the function, assuming Lisa earns $15 per hour. 2. The number of minutes James takes depends on the number of laps he runs in practice. The independent variable is the number of laps and the dependent variable is the number of min- utes. Let x = the number of laps ran and let y = the number of minutes it took James to run. The set of ordered pairs {(1,2), (2, 4), (3, 6), (4, 8), (5, 10)} can be used to represent the function, assuming James runs 1 lap per 2 mins. 3. The gallons of gasoline Phil uses in the truck depends on the time or how long he traveled from Ohio to New Hampshire.
