Running Header: Unit IV Essay 1 Unit IV Essay Daniel E. Moore Columbia Southern University
Unit IV Essay 2 Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) handling has many moving parts in the whole process. Overall, the Municipal Solid Waste has to decide if and how to process the solid waste before it reaches the landfill. Not everyone knows the benefits of the MSW. MSW contains combustible, recyclable, and compostable materials. Most people know that they can be separated at the curbside but what happens next can benefit how it is obtained. Depending when it is separated it can go to different places and ultimately be used for different things. The landfill is the last stop for the MSW and it is beneficial to know what exactly is being done with our solid waste. Since the final place of MSW is the landfill, it can be resourceful to reduce the amount of MSW that is sent to the landfill. Like said before MSW can contain combustible materials that can be used again by burning and converting into electricity in a refuse power plant. These power plants generate electricity and reduce the could be massive amount of MSW. Several technologies have been developed that make processing of MSW for energy generation cleaner and even more economical than the past. Some include, landfill gas capture, combustion, pyrolysis, gasification, and plasma gasification. Internationally, recycling is aimed to minimalize waste by sorting and recycling and composting, combustion and stockpiling of residues. 40% if of the MSW relates to easily degradable organics waste such as, food waste, the removal of this part of waste from waste land due to composting and waste conversion reduces the environmental burden (Krusir, Shpyrko, Sagdeeva & Zakharchuck, 2019). Recycling is another great method to reduce landfill volume and encourages further beneficial use of waste materials. Most cities have a recycling option when signing up for trash removal and some are even mandatory. The sources of MSW often comes from residential homes. They consist of cardboard, paper, glass, plastics, food waste, yard waste and other special wastes such as hazardous
