PHYS2014 Fall 2010 Benton OSU Physics Dept. 1 Use Of The Scientific Calculator 1. Scientific Notation: to enter an exponent, you need to use the key labeled EXP . This key is located above the 7 key. To enter 3 × 10 4 , press 3 EXP 4. Display: 3. 04 (This does NOT mean 3 to 4 th power, but 3 × 10 4 or 30,000) 2. Negative Numbers: To enter a negative number, press the key labeled +/- located below the 2 key after you’ve entered the number. Be careful not to press the - key for subtraction. You only want to change the sign to negative. To enter -3, press 3 +/- Display: -3. To enter 3 × 10 -4 , press 3 EXP 4 +/- Display: 3.-04 To enter -3 × 10 4 , press 3 +/- EXP 4 Display: -3. 04 To enter -3 × 10 -4 , press 3 +/- EXP 4 +/- Display: -3.-04 3. Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division of Numbers in Scientific Notation To calculate 3 × 10 4 + 1.2 × 10 5 , press 3 EXP 4 + 1.2 EXP 5 = Display: 150000 To display the result in scientific notation, press the F E key. Display: 1.5 05 To calculate 3 × 10 4 - 1.2 × 10 5 , press 3 EXP 4 - 1.2 EXP 5 = Display: -90000 To calculate -3 × 10 4 × 1.2 × 10 -5
