Philosophies of Life Review Rachels Chapter 7: The Utilitarian Approach 1. Principle of Utility – Morality is about making the world as happy as possible according to Jeremy Bentham. Utilitarianism Euthanasia – It is moral because it results in more happiness than pain. Laws should allow it because it is not contrary to the general welfare. Marijuana – Prevents alcoholics, less taxes, happier people, but less productive people. The benefits outweigh the cons so utilitarians agree that marijuana should be legal, etc. Nonhuman Animals – Animals are not rational, lack ability to speak, and are simply not human. But according to Bentham humans and animals have the same rights to moral concern. Research on animals is acceptable if it is done for a greater good. Slaughtering animals for the purpose of meat is okay as long as the conditions in which the animals live in are acceptable. Rachels Chapter 8: The Debate Over Utilitarianism
