Essay Question #3 Civil War Discuss the causes of the American Civil War. To examine this question comprehensively, you must consider the following topics: (1) Anglo – American expansion into the lands west of the Mississippi (2) the great sectional debates that decided whether or not to allow slavery into those western lands; and (3) the sectional crisis of the 1850s. I. Introduction – Inevitable The Civil War began over the issue of states rights but gradually came down to the issue over slavery. The war was inevitable because of westward expansion, sectional debates, and sectional crises. II. Westward Expansion A. Manifest Destiny (1840s – 1850s) The belief by Americans that God wanted the United States to expand from east to west. 1. Oregon a. Oregon Trail Was created after the Louisiana Purchase. Allowed citizens to travel westward to Oregon. b. Settlement with Great Britain 2. Texas a. Texas Revolution (1836) Broke away from Mexico. b. Annexation (1845) Made a constitution very similar to the United States so it was easy for the U.S. to annex them. B.
