Silas Kirsch Professor Brown Political Science 4 19 February 2020 Marx Prompt One Despite their early camaraderie and shared philosophy, in On the Jewish Question , Karl Marx critiques his fellow intellectual Bruno Bauer and his perspectives on social and political emancipation particularly with regards to religion in his work The Jewish Question. The chief grievance Marx has with Bauer’s assessment is summarized when he writes, “we find that his error lies in the fact that he subjects to criticism only the ‘Christian state,’ not the ‘state as such,’ that he does not investigate the relation of political emancipation to human emancipation.” Bauer criticizes the “Christian state” for discriminating against Jewish people based on their religion. He proposes that the Jews ought to be emancipated, through either the Christian state becoming secular or Jewish individuals practicing Judaism in a way that does not conflict with the public
