Religion Notes 03/21/11 Sangha: Third of the 3 Jewels 1) -Reasons for development of Buddhist Community: -Refuge for ‘sons and daughters’ of the Buddha -Material needs catered for by -Institution (usually a monastery) -Householders -Texts developed to regulate activity of monks and nuns = vinayas 2) -Authority NOT to rest in a single person or institution -Monks/nuns settled in separate monastic colonies -After 300 years several Buddhist councils developed to regulate monastic people -All this helped to foster -Autonomy amongst various Sangha’s -Divergent understandings of dharma Buddhist Expansion - 4-300 BCE Buddhist monks spread across the Gangetic Plains - -272 – 232 BCE Emperor Asoka (Mauraya Dynasty) boosted political fortunes of Buddhism by: -Unifying social classes -Linked householders with monastic elites -Patronage for important monks -Spread Buddhism from Afghanistan to Bengal, Himalayas to Ceylon
