Religion Notes 01/24/11 Liberation (Moksha) I. Illusion -Avidya -Maya II. Rebirth -Samsara -Karma Atman = Brahman | | | v v v Many Reality One | One If Atman = Brahman, why do we not realize this now? -We're fundamentally ignorant -It's the condition of humanity, and the nature of man What is ignorance? -We don't realize that the way we relate to reality is veiled, covered (individuation) -Atman → process of ego formation, individuation -Instead of realizing that we're all part of the One, we believe that we exist separately What does ignorance mean? -Avidya -Sanskrit root “Vid” which means vision, sight. -Vidya – Insightful, enlightened, knowledgeable perception -A-Vidya- Opposite -Cause of Avidya? -Due to the power of illusion (Maya) What is Maya? -Trickery of the mind that happened through the mind's own limitation, such as space and time. -What tricks the mind? -Maya deceives the consciousness into believing: -What we perceive is the totality of all that exists -Perceiver and perceived are fundamentally separate, unrelated → duality
