Religion Notes 01/26/11 -Many gods/deities, but still a focus on the ONE. Is this contradictory? -Max Muller noted that in a number of the hymns in the Hindu scriptures, the god being addressed was as being the One and Only, but there was praise to other deities as well. Praise wasn't reserved for only the One, but other deities as well. This contradicted the ideas of monotheism vs. polytheism. Max Muller coined the term Henotheism to circumvent these two categorizations. It means One that IS Many (an alternative logic). -Two ways to understand this paradox: -Elites -Vedic Orthodoxy → They were Indo-Aryans: Brahmins -VEDA → Sruti → revealed -Indra (minor Visnu/Shiva) Paths to Liberation: -Karma Marg (Path of Ritual – Exterior form) → Jnana Marg (Path of Wisdom – Interior Form ) -Popular -Heterodoxy -Dravidians -Puranas/Agamas → Smriti → remembered -Visnu/Shiva Combination of the Inner and Outer: -Bhakti Marg (Way of Devotion) which came about through the influence of popular
