Religion Notes 02/09/11 Mother Goddess Shiva related to transcendence, related to the worship of the lingam. This aspect is particularly a male aspect. But the actual manifestation of Shiva’s power is given a completely different name (entirely feminine) known as Shakti (force/raw energy). In Saivism, Shiva is the main deity, and Shakti is secondary. In the Mother Goddess/ Shakti cults, Shiva is secondary and Devi is primary. Various names of the Mother Goddess Devi – “div” is to shine, so Devi is “the shining one” Parvati – Takes the form of Durga, who is transformed into Kali Earliest Manifestations -Stone structures -Smooth oval stones -> concentric stone rings -Terracotta Figurines -Vessels or Jars -Yoni (womb) -Megalithic Domes Veda -Minor Figure -Aditi -Usa = dawn -Ratri = night -Surya -Lakshmi -Gayatri -Vak = speech 200 AD -Agamas -Tantras -Mahabharata -Rbirth of Goddess 250 AD -Devi Mahatmya (the glory of the goddess) -Resurgence and fusion of Aryan and Non-Aryan aspects -There’s an epic that tells of Devi’s battles with the king of demons,
