Rob Baker Joshua R. Haar Survey of American History 9/8/11 Vision: “The Rocky Road to Revolution” 1. (A) What did John Adams mean by “We must Suffer People to take their own Way?” (B) Was this Strategy successful? Why or why not? (A)In June of 1775, John Adams meant many things when he said “We must Suffer people to take their own way.” When he said this he meant that they should not push too hard to be independent from Britain. By saying we must suffer, he meant that they need to wait it out to become independent. If they were to push independence too hard, the people in the new world would want to move back to Britain. (B) The strategy that John Adams took turned out to be very successful. This plan was successful because they ended up not pushing it too hard and the other colonies ended up wanting to become independent also. 2. (A) Name at least three arguments favoring independence voiced early in the Second Continental Congress. (B) How did advocates of independence expect other countries to react? (A)One of the main arguments that the Second Continental Congress had towards independence was to create an army so that they could defend themselves.
