According to Blight, Frederick Douglass attached Reconstruction and Civil War to emancipation. Frederick Douglass believed emancipation was at the center of the history for African Americans and the Civil War was brought about emancipation. Frederick Douglass said that the emancipation brought dignity, suffrage, citizenship, and freedom for the African Americans. Frederick Douglass is the reason that the anniversary of the emancipation proclamation is a holiday.
