Cardiovascular 2 Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems The heart and circulatory system makes up the cardiovascular system (Texas Heart Institute, 2008). Together they are responsible for oxygenating blood and pumping them to reach the different organs of the body. The heart’s main function is to receive deoxygenated blood and send them to the lungs for oxygenation. The oxygenated blood is then released back to the body. Without these two systems, life will not be possible. There are four valves within the heart. They are the pulmonic, aortic, tricuspid and mitral valve (Cleveland Clinic, 2008). The tricuspid and mitral valve is located between the atria (upper heart chambers) and the ventricles (lower heart chambers). The pulmonic and aortic valve is between the ventricles and the major blood vessels leaving the heart. (Cleveland Clinic, 2008). The system is not open-ended and linear; but rather, is a closed circle. Moreover, it is elastic rather than rigid. The left and right ventricles, which pump into the same system that they pump out of, are in series with two interposed vascular beds
