Thesis of lecture Carboxylic acids, compounds of the type RCOOH, comprise one of the most frequently encountered classes of organic compounds. Countless natural products are carboxylic acids. Some, such as acetic acid, have been known for centuries. Others, such as the prostaglandins, have been isolated only recently, and scientists continue to discover new roles that these substance play as regulators of biological processes. The significance of carboxylic acids is magnified when one realizes that they are parent compounds of a large group of derivatives, which includes acyl chlorides, acid anhydrides, asters, and amides.
