LECTURE #3: The French and Indian War / The Road to Revolution KEY TERMS (5) Salutary Neglect and (6) The French and Indian War Part I: Colonial Life A. New Migrants: a. Germans: One of largest groups. Made up of Mennonites at first. Came in search of religious toleration to Virginia and upper parts of colonies. Lutheran come next and settle in Pennsylvania. b. Scots-Irish Wanted to get away from war. Mostly settles in colonies north of Virginia. c. Native Americans Gradually whites started to take land from Indians from coast to Appalachian mountains. English mixed economically with Indians. Indians try to avoid being eradicated. Indians trying to maintain their conditions but live with English settlers at the same time. B. Economic Structure: a. General Economy As country grew, so did economy. Salutary neglect was a willful neglect of British policy. b. Consumer Economy: English colonies begin to Anglicize. Every country different. As people buy more leisure goods, more standard view for what a colony looks like. Bad aspect is rise of consumer credit culture.
