LECTURE 14!!! Sphinx – o One solids piece of rock built in the middle of a quarry. It is an outcropping of limestone. Around it was chiseled away and the stones around it were quarried to build other structures in Egypt. Alignment of the sphinx was a little bit off of Khafre’s The causeway is encroached by the sphinx It is in bad shape and has long been undergoing restorations…top is in good shape, but the lower parts are peeling away Believed that the ottoman turks took off the nose Its paws are about the half the size of the overall body and also the head is a bit small. The head is believed to be the head of Khafre Sphinx rock was honored early on Was restored early as the New Kingdom No inner structures 5 th dynasty kings started making suntemples and they are similar to the Pyramids but they are not funerary they are open air temples to worship gods…there are mentions of six of them but we have only found 2 o We have found Userkhaf and Niuserra
