Lecture 20!! 1. New Kingdom a. The new kingdom was a new time of prosperity when Egypt ruled most of the Near East. This period of supremacy is known as the Egyptian Empire. b. Dynasty 18 b.i. Ahmose and Tuthmose b.ii. Tuthmose was a commoner by birth and marries into royalty b.iii. Hatshepsut (She is a Pharaoh) b.iii.1. She is the first to proclaim herself as Pharaoh and adopted the Pharaoh titles and adopted all of the manly traits b.iv. Tuthmose III b.iv.1. When he was a child he was supposed to be the next Pharaoh, but Hatshepsut took power and usually the child would disappear but he was actually place in a high position and then became Pharaoh. b.v. Akhenaten b.v.1. Best known as the Heretic king who reorganizes the religion of Egypt b.vi. Tutankhamun b.vi.1. Not that important except his tomb was found in all it glory- gold artifacts. Gives us a clue into even these lesser kings got amazing burials. Found mummy – hole in skull, maybe executed…someone possible clubbed him… b.vii.
