NAME_________________________ EXP 3604 COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY Research Assignment #2: Solving Anagram Problems Anagrams are scrambled words; unscrambling them is an example of what has been called "problems of arrangement." There have been a large number of studies of anagram solving over the years. PREPARATION: Pick up a copy of the Gainesville Sun. See how long it takes you to solve the anagrams in the Jumbleword Puzzle (usually in the first few pages of the classified section). Think about why some items seemed to be harder than the others. TASK: Select a "variable" that you think might have an effect on time (or accuracy) of solving a short list of anagrams, and that you could manipulate in the research activity. In coming up with a variable, think about your own performance, and about material in the course regarding memory retrieval and problem solving. Some variables used in prior research and in class include attention and distraction, knowledge among the participants about the “domain” of the solutions, priming of various sorts, characteristics of the anagrams themselves (e.g.,
