On Sept 14, We’ll focus primarily on starting Assn 3. We’ll discuss these sections on Sept 19 (M). 3.1 Conceptual Model What is a conceptual model? Why is simplification necessary? What are the steps in formulating a conceptual model? What are hydrostratigraphic units? What data are used to prepare a water budget and define the flow system? 3.2 Model Types 2-D Areal models : What are the differences between confined, unconfined and mixed aquifer models? You may have already noticed that MODFLOW allows the layer choices of “confined”, “unconfined (Layer 1)”, “Unconfined (S varies)”, and “Unconfined (T varies). You can jump ahead to Box 3.1 (page 77) to find out what that means. Profile models: we’ve already run an example (Assn #2) Quasi- and Fully 3D models: What is the main difference between the two? In the models discussed on Sept 12, what are examples of Quasi 3D models?
