Reading Guide Sept 14, 19 A&W 3.1-3.3 On Sept 14, We’ll focus primarily on starting Assn 3. We’ll discuss these sections on Sept 19 (M). 3.1 Conceptual Model What is a conceptual model? Why is simplification necessary? What are the steps in formulating a conceptual model? What are hydrostratigraphic units? What data are used to prepare a water budget and define the flow system? 3.2 Model Types 2-D Areal models : What are the differences between confined, unconfined and mixed aquifer models? You may have already noticed that MODFLOW allows the layer choices of “confined”, “unconfined (Layer 1)”, “Unconfined (S varies)”, and “Unconfined (T varies). You can jump ahead to Box 3.1 (page 77) to find out what that means. Profile models: we’ve already run an example (Assn #2) Quasi- and Fully 3D models: What is the main difference between the two? In the models discussed on Sept 12, what are examples of Quasi 3D models?

Unformatted text preview: How would you choose between constructing a fully or quasi-3D model? 3.3 Laying out the grid What is the difference between a block- and a mesh-centered grid? Which type is MODFLOW? How do finite-element meshes differ from finite-difference grids? Model layers can be selected to represent hydrostratigraphic units (Fig 3.13 and Fig 3.14) or can cross layers (Fig 3.16). What are the pros and cons of each way? How are “pinch outs” represented in quasi and fully 3D models? How can you minimize the number of inactive nodes in a finite-difference model? What are some considerations for deciding on the extent of your model (defining your model boundaries)? Why is nodal spacing important? What are the advantages and disadvantages on refining the grid in certain areas? What inaccuracy is introduced by an irregular grid? What is the rule of thumb for changing the grid spacing? What is telescopic mesh refinement?...
