Objectives • Use history to go beyond popular images of samurai warriors: who were samurai and what roles did they play in Japanese history? • Explore the development of stereotypes about geisha and Japanese women more generally • Delve into the myths and realities of Japan’s organized crime world: the Yakuza • Overall, develop an appreciation for history as a tool to debunk stereotypes (samurai/yakuza) and also to trace how they are created (geisha/yakuza) The Famous battle of Dan no Ura (1185) between the Taira and the Minamoto
