Life on Land A smaller carnovore that preceeds T. rex in time is Albertosaurus . This smaller version of T. rex reached lengths of between 7 and 8.5 meters and weighed in at a mere 2 tons. It ranged North America in the time interval just prior to the rise of T. rex . A related group of carnivorous Cretaceous dinosaurs is the dromaesaurs, considered by some recent studies to be the sister group to the birds. Utahraptor , discovered from middle Cretaceous rocks in Utah, is the largest dromaesaurid at a weight of one ton and a length of 5 to 7 meters.
