The Protestant Reformations - There was not 1 single protestant reformation; protestants didn’t always agree with each other - Called an age of reformation b/c this period in the West produces different denominations - 4 Keys for understanding Ages of Reformations: o Early reform movements don’t have intentions for starting a new church; wanted to return Christianity to their conception/view for an earlier, purer state of being o Early protestant movements shared Luther’s view that powers of the clergy were not legitimate o All Christian Churches of late 1300s emphasized correct doctrine and orer in personal behavior (wasn’t just about belief, was also about behavior) o Churches were closely allied wither the territorial powers in their reigion and worked to expand those powers People didn’t get to choose what church they belonged to; you belonged to whatever the governors of your territory chose - Key things for understanding…. . o Protestant comes from “protest” o Core of Luther’s teachings are a core of broad Protestant teachings Believed in: “3 Alones” Sola Fide – Faith Alone – Salvation comes through Faith alone, not by doing good works; Faith is unearned – can’t get it from God Sola Gratia – Grace Alone – Salvation depends on Grace alone Sola Scriptura – Bible Alone – Bible represents the word of God and contained in it is everything the human needs to know and is the only religious source of authority These 3 form a core for Protestant in the 16 th century – questions of free will o With free will, humans can call upon God and earn merit; big divide over free will - Traditional view is that Martin Luther instigates The Reformation o Hinges on concept of Reform = “To either return to an earlier way of being or to make things better” o Certain calls for reform had a wider impact than others before them because of political environment o Early Reform wasn’t about being anti-catholic; wanted to correct abuses and beliefs they saw in their churches; improve the churches themselves Early reformers never planned on leaving the Church - Late Medieval Popular Religion – one of the most flourishing periods of religious devotions o Individual salvation – burn in hell or rejoice in heaven? - Late medieval religion was about spending as little time as possible in
