Teach for America Describe the Company: Teach for America was an idea created by Wendy Kopp, who was an undergraduate at Princeton University. She was certain that many people of her generation wanted to make a change in the world and just needed a way to do so. It was her belief that if given the chance, students would choose teaching over more profitable opportunities if there was some sort of teaching corp. At the age of 21, Kopp managed to raise $2.5 million for a start up fund and hire a small crew to begin Teach for America in 1990. There were only 500 original members who trained and then taught in 6 urban communities, those being Los Angeles, Greater New Orleans, New York, Eastern North Carolina, and South Louisiana. Teach for America tries to fight the challenge of education inequality. It has been proven that only half of the students in poverty areas will graduate high school at the age of 18, and those that do usually only have an 8 th grade level education. Then, only 1 in 10 of those students will continue their education and graduate from college. Teach for America tries to take the best and brightest new graduates from universities and place
