Megan Kave Music Appreciation Assignment 4 Flute The flute as in instrument in general has been around for thousands of years. The first side blown flute was created in Asia around 900 B.C. Before this, flutes were made more like whistles and were actually made from bones, mostly tibia bones. Flutes continued to evolve until 1100 A.D. when the western cultures began to play side blown flutes. Finally in 1660, flutes began to be tuned by specifically placing the holes of the flute on the tube. The flute’s long history has led it to be known as the oldest woodwind instrument and has lead to the evolution to its current form. The largest exclusive manufacture of flutes and piccolos today is Gemeinhardt. Other companies that produce flutes currently include Pearl, LeBlanc, and the list goes on and on. A famous flutist that helped introduce the current day flute would be Theobald Boehm (1794-1881). In 1831 he devised a flute that gave the player new mechanical means to control holes beyond the fingers reach and in 1847 he created the new metal flute with a cylindrical bore
