WWII is the reverse. o Western front: very mobile, very short war WWII far more deadly than WWI b/c industrialization coming fully to bear o 9mil fatalities in WWI to 55mil fatalities in WWII o Not manpower, but destructive power b/c new weapons (strategic bombing) Eastern front is very different from anything weve seen before o German idea: destroy military AND annihilate the Slav races WWI fought and settled on western front, but WWII on eastern front Britain and France suffer most in WWI. Russia suffers most in WWII o 24mil die in Soviet territories o Belarus had 50% its population killed or moved Weapons: tanks, nuclear weapons, aircraft carriers, air forces Changes of BOP b/w WWI and II: o See world wealth handout o UK, France, Germany go down; US stays the same o USSR doubles (Stalin industrializes at breakneck pace). Japan also goes up Germany started this war of aggression o Wants continental hegemony o Exterminates Slav races (eastern Europe) and Jews Racial question has to do w/ competition w/ US Immigration to the US leaves Europe less competitive o Hitler wants to organize European economic space to compete with the US Thinks the US will dominate the world, an inhuman civilization o So very different treatment b/w the conquered French and conquered Slavs 1918-1933: o Germany is quiet, consumed with domestic problems o France most powerful in continental Europe Jan.30, 1933; o Hitler comes to power o Starts remilitarizing Rhineland (territory b/w France and Germany) in 1936 France is scared of another WWI and has only a defensive strategy 1938: Germany annexes Austria (Anschluss) Sept 30 1938: Allies give Germany Czechoslovakia (all that is predominantly German): Bohemia and Botagia (?) 1939: Germany ready for war o April: Annexes the rest of Czech in March o Britain and France guarantee Poland against German invasion...
