Part 1. Literacy Assessments Formal or Informal Rational How to avoid misuse Exit Tickets Informal Exit tickets are a great way to engage students and for teachers to be able to see quickly where the class as a whole stands. Exit tickets need to be open-ended questions, so that teachers can fully evaluate their student’s thought process. Peer Editing Informal Research shows that students learn a lot from their peers. Allowing them to edit each other, allows them the opportunity to learn together. Teachers need to offer clear instructions of what the students are to be looking for. Even offering examples of correctly peer edited and rubrics for the students to follow. Essay Writing Formal In order for students to become good at writing, they need to be given opportunities for feedback. When offering essays for formal assessments, you are providing your students feedback and opportunities to grow.
