Juan Torres ENGL 1102 Sep 22, 2009 “A different view of Hills like white elephants” by Ernest Hemingway “Hills like whites elephants” by Ernest Hemingway is an excellent example of literary techniques of the short story that, along with the theory of the iceberg, gives Hemingway an aura of exceptional storyteller. Therefore, he says that "tell a story is, knowing how to hide a secret." Knowing Hemingway’s ideas, and the fact that the story was written after the First World War makes it hard to simply say that “Hills like white elephants” is a story just about abortion. Indeed, I think there is a deep secret on this story. Trying to find the secret made me find, very clearly, that inside it is a social and political idea which maybe is the secret itself. In an overview, the story begins with the description of the Ebro Valley. For me here is the clue, the Ebro Valley is a place that had been marked by the rivalry and by a clear social and political instability. In fact, this region today continues having huge political, social and cultural instability to the point that Cataluña has adopted its own language, nationality and laws. The description of the place made by Hemingway, and the story itself, is simply the reflection of the social, political, economic and cultural differences that Cataluña has with Spain. On “Hills like
