What is personality? An organized combination of attributes, motives, values, and behaviors The study of personality is largely divided into two main approaches: (1) personality trait theory and (2) self concept theory. Others approaches, are offshoots. (1) Personality trait theory studies patterns of traits:”Psychometric Approach” - Traits Unique to each individual -Traits are relatively consistent across situations and time (2) Self-Concept Theory studies sum total of self ideas, perceptions, attitudes; a very different history and tradition than trait theory; uses terms such as - Self Esteem: overall evaluation of oneself in different domains -Identity: Overall sense of who you are
