Jenna Horwich English 250 Prof. Tanner 4/26/10 Part 3: Rhetorical Analysis The Funding Differences in Illinois, documented essay written by Jenna Horwich incorporates use of ethos and pathos. Horwich discusses the issue of funding differences between inner city and suburban schools. By giving her solution to this issue, stating past attempts, and giving quotations and statistics; Horwich makes this issue jump out to any reader. Horwich opens this piece with a quote. This immediately draws in the reader’s attention. This quote by a superintendant of a suburban school also introduces the topic. Horwich used this strategy to ensure that the reader’s attention would not be lost. From the quote Horwich moves to better explaining this issue. She hits the emotional feel of the reader when she discusses the effect that poor funding for inner students has on the student’s future. By not hiding any of this information and stating it right away in the paper, Horwich establishes credibility with the reader.
