8/1/11 Personality Disorders: Past class: defense mechanisms - Fixation, regression, etc. Ex. Reaction formation (the more we try to do in the name of good): guy killing all people in Indonesia to change society and culture changes for the better. Ex. Saving owls in trees, out of jobs, owls die because of too thick forests *all depend on super ego Coping mechanisms : can be conscience or unconscious depending on superego construction: healthy way to manage instincts - Conscience of id instincts (sexual and aggressive impulses, but we manage them in a culturally approved fashion) Adjustment mechanisms: (reasonable super-ego): aware of impulse, must be appropriately managed - Humor - Suppression : temporarily suspending the impulse until an appropriately time and place - Anticipation (phantasy): anticipate when the need will be met -S ublimation : special example of displacement: results in culturally valued activity (art, music, dance, etc.) - Altruism : doing a good deed with nothing expected in return (identification)
