You will be required to answer 6 essay/short answer-type questions for the final. Each question will be worth 30 points. You will be required to answer 4 questions on lecture material. You will also be required to answer one question regarding the student presentations (question 1). You must also answer one of two analytical questions (question 11 or 12). Please note that information from the student presentations and the analytical question may also include questions regarding material presented before the midterm. Be sure to spell out acronyms. Answer the following question regarding the poster presentations: 1. Student presentations were prepared on 17 topics. 5 of these will be posted on the class website. You will be provided 3 of the 5 topics on the final exam. Choose one of the three topics (but not your own) and answer the following questions. a. Provide a brief overview of the topic (5 points) b. Briefly describe one of the laws that is covered by the presentation and how it regulates the chemical (10 points) c. Briefly describe the applicable regulation, including its current status. (10 points) d. Give a chemical discussed in the presentation and its health and/or environmental effects (5 points) Answer one of the following questions, from material covered before the midterm: 3. Regarding the federal government’s efforts to address the problem of water pollution through the CWA and the SDWA and their amendments, answering the following: (30 points) a. Describe (what happened, when it happened, where it happened) the incident that led to the adoption of the CWA. (5 points) 1969 an oil slick and assorted debris caught fire under a railroad trestle on the Cuyahoga River in Ohio. “Burning River”. CWA enacted in 1972 b. What is nonpoint source pollution and give two examples? (5 points) Pollution not from end of a drain or pipe- cannot find point of source- often runoff, like agricultural or mining. c. Give five activities used to implement the CWA. (5 points) permits standards effluent limits TMDLs funds for treatment plants d. What Federal agency is responsible for implementing the CWA? (5 points) US EPA e. What does TMDL stand for? How is a TMDL calculated? What does a state have to do to establish a TMDL? (10 points)
