1 of 6 GEL 100 Fall 2011 Mass movement exercise Our goals today: 1. Model a system of loose sediment slopes and determine the steepest angle of stable slopes. 2. Describe methods of how to measure the steepest angle. 3. Determine the most accurate AND precise method for modeling the system and measuring angles, and explain why. 4. Make appropriate observations. 5. Describe the observed relationship between sediment grain size and angle of repose. 6. Describe the observed relationships between water content and angle of repose. Introduction : Accuracy vs. Precision: Most people use these two terms almost interchangeably, and few people actually use them correctly. In science, they mean very different things, both important to assessing data quality. Accurate means “capable of providing a correct reading or measurement." In physical science, a measurement is accurate if it correctly reflects the size of the thing being measured. Precise means "repeatable, reliable, getting the same measurement each time." We can never make a perfect measurement. The best we can do is to come as close
