To find churches, use standard online and print resources: the phone book, google.com/maps
has church listings. I have tried church-
specific online services such as churchpick.com
, but have not found them very helpful.
Make sure the churches you have found are eligible for inclusion in the survey. See the
Make sure that the three churches you choose belong to three different categories as defined in
Table of Church Types
. This step is tricky, and may involve some research. Grouping
Christian denominations into categories is a complex business; the groups derived at will look
very different depending on whether one emphasizes historical, liturgical, political,
organizational, or doctrinal differences. My categories are slightly modified from groupings
found in James Adair’s
. A different grouping, but still helpful if used
with care, is Wikipedia’s List of Christian Denominations
. Placing a given church within a
category may require the exercise of judgment.
Contact the three churches chosen. When contacting your chosen churches (by phone, email,
or in person), you may use the
Model Contact Questions
below (but you don’t have to). You
receive a response (though this may be a negative response) from every church included
in your survey. If you cannot get in touch with a church, or it does not respond to email
include this church in the survey.
