REL 313: Christianity How to Complete the Christianity in Mt. Pleasant Survey Value: 3% Purpose: To create a list of the churches in the Mount Pleasant area, to get an initial sense of the diversity of these churches, and to prepare for the Christianity in Mount Pleasant Report. Basic instructions: Fill out the survey form either by hand or (preferably) by downloading a copy and typing in the fields indicated. Save and print the survey form, sign, and bring to class on the due date. More detailed instructions: 1. Find churches in the Mount Pleasant area as defined by the Survey Area Map . To find churches, use standard online and print resources: the phone book, google.com/maps , yellowpages.com , yelp.com —even tripadviser.com has church listings. I have tried church- specific online services such as churchpick.com , but have not found them very helpful. 2. Make sure the churches you have found are eligible for inclusion in the survey. See the Exclusion List . 3. Make sure that the three churches you choose belong to three different categories as defined in the Table of Church Types . This step is tricky, and may involve some research. Grouping Christian denominations into categories is a complex business; the groups derived at will look very different depending on whether one emphasizes historical, liturgical, political, organizational, or doctrinal differences. My categories are slightly modified from groupings found in James Adair’s Introducing Christianity . A different grouping, but still helpful if used with care, is Wikipedia’s List of Christian Denominations . Placing a given church within a category may require the exercise of judgment. 4. Contact the three churches chosen. When contacting your chosen churches (by phone, email, or in person), you may use the Model Contact Questions below (but you don’t have to). You must receive a response (though this may be a negative response) from every church included in your survey. If you cannot get in touch with a church, or it does not respond to email queries, do not include this church in the survey. 5. Fill out the survey for each church. Print. Sign. Submit during class on the due date. Grading: 1 point for each fully filled out survey form describing an eligible church (3 points total) + ½ points for each eligible church found by no (0) other students. + ¼ points for each eligible church found by 1-2 other students. – ¼ points for each eligible church found by 7+ other students. Accordingly, a correctly completed survey can receive a score ranging from 2.25 to 4.5, depending on your success in locating and contacting eligible churches unnoticed by your fellow students.
