C401 Film and Revolution Professor Joshua Malitsky, Final Take-Home Exam Directions—Answer the following questions in a 10-12 pp. essay. Question #1— John Mraz distinguishes Cuban cinema’s from early Soviet cinema’s contribution to world cinema by arguing that Cuban cinema is defined by its “dialectical resonance.” First, explain what Mraz means by this using examples from both Alvarez’ and Gutierrez Alea’s films. Second, distinguish Alvarez’ and Gutierrez Alea’s approaches to cinema. How does each create “dialectical resonance?” (2-3 pages) Question #2— Throughout the semester we have looked at four different filmmakers’ (two non-fiction film and two fiction film directors) approaches to filmmaking, thinking in detail about the styles, forms, and methods they use to create films that support Marxism. For this question I would like you to rank each filmmaker from the most Marxist to the least Marxist. To do so you need to articulate in one page the criteria on which you are basing your decision.
