SLIDE 1: In 2008 Cleveland City Schools chief executive Eugene Sanders held a news conference in which he put a policy in place that all Cleveland City Public Schools would have to wear Uniforms. During this conference Sanders briefly noted that he understood that for the students and community this new uniform policy would be a culture shift but… SLIDE 2: He mostly talked about how the new policy would create greater success in their public school system and therefore it would create greater success in their community. He also talked about how the uniform policy would lower the burden and costs on parents of having to buy children new and often expensive clothes every year for school. SLIDE 3: This is not an isolated event: many public school districts across the country have adopted and put in place policies like that of Cleveland City Schools. Where school uniforms used to be reserved only for private and religious schools this is no longer the case with more and more uniformed public schools popping up in the United States. SLIDE 4: The fairly new trend of putting uniform policies in public schools has sparked many debates among different populations across the country. Stakeholders including parents with children in public schools, students, teachers and researchers have varying opinions on public schools having uniform policies and, like Eugene Sanders noted, there are reasons for people to agree with or disagree with the policies.
