Megan Wauschek Short-Short Story Ducks “Slow down Izzy, you’re too fast for this old man” Mark was 51. He was under the impression that making fun of one’s self is the best way to hide insecurities. Even to his daughter, Isabella, who had no idea of age yet. She thought her mother was old, and she was only 37, she thought her step-brother was old at 23. Still Mark found these small self ridicules the best way to deal with his aging. Isabella waited, then looked back at her dad with the more excitement than Mark could even imagine having if he had won the lottery. Isabella had been waiting for this day for weeks and this weekend, sure enough, ducklings. There must have been 10 or 15 different little duck families. Waddling around the edges, in the grass, swimming in the pond, like fluffy little redcoats in the British Infantry. Following blindly; father duck, mother duck, with their small soldiers close behind. “Don’t scare em off now!” Mark shouted out as Izzy ran around closer to the pond.
