Monteiro Name: ____________________ CE 60 – EXAMINATION Please justify all your answers Question 1 (30 points) 1) Describe the chemical reaction responsible for the formation of ettringite. (6 points) 2) In the lab, you have failed concrete cylinders under compressive loads. Explain why very often one observes the formation of cones at the extremity of the cylinder once the test is finished. (8 points) 3) Why is concrete weaker in tension than in compression? (7 points) 4) The thermal stresses are proportional to the elastic modulus of concrete. As discussed in class, large amounts of aggregate increase the elastic modulus of concrete and yet in large concrete dams the designer specifies a large amount of aggregate in the mix proportion. Explain this apparent paradox. (9 points)
