1 There are many important differences between the students in a classroom which help children to develop a sense of identity among their peers. In the Education world we label this as classroom diversity. In my third observation at the Falk School, I identified ethnicity, language and special needs as the three main dimensions of diversity in the classroom. There were 17 white students, 2 African American students and 2 Hispanic students present in Mr. Nardini’s first grade class on the day of my observation, and although this may not seem like very diverse pool of students, Mr. Nardini assured me that his class was not a very good indication of Falk’s racial diversity. As I made note that there were no Asian students in the room, Mr. Nardini explained that while the school is made up with mostly Caucasian students, there were also many Asian and African American students enrolled. As far as language differences go, there are a few bilingual students in the classroom. Mr. N says there are quite a few parents who speak another language, but so far the development of that second language has only manifested in a few of his students. In terms of special needs, Mr. N has 5 students who go for reading help and 2 who are pulled out for speech support during language arts. Another smaller dimension of diversity in the room is age difference, some of the students are a young six and others are an old seven. I’ve learned this age difference has a lot to do with when the child’s parents felt their son or daughter was ready to start Kindergarten. Other contributing factors were behavioral problems and late summer birthdays. Unfortunately, the Falk School does not have a lot of diversity in terms of socioeconomic status because it is tuition based and children from poor families can’t afford it. Similarly, the students at my UCDC observation are all children of faculty of the University of Pittsburgh, so their socioeconomic status is also relatively high. The main
