Stephanie Wright Soc 150-22 Br. Tri Nguyen The Sociological Imagination A personal problem that my friend and her family have recently been faced with is immigrating to a foreign country. Her father works for a company that required him to move to the United States in order to keep and continue working at the same job. When they came here from India no one in her family spoke English. Now that her father is working in the United States, she is now enrolled in an American school. She had to sacrifice her life in India before going off to college for the benefit of her family and for the sake of her father’s job security. Learning a new language was difficult, but it was not the only pot hole she came across in route to her new life in America. She also had to take special classes to become a United States citizen and she had to adapt to a whole new dress code and adjust to new social norms. The sociological Imagination is used when one has the ability to turn private problems into public issues. There are three components to the sociological imagination: biography, history and culture. The components affected my friend when she was struggling to find social acceptance and they presented solutions for the problem that she was facing when deciding how to go about fitting in at both the work place and in the public school system. When finding resolutions to her problem, she thought of people who had experienced the same dilemma. She had talked to her mother, who had once been unfamiliar with the country of India as a Pakistan
