Final Review Questions The final exam is cumulative, covering all of the material that we have learned this quarter. However, the final will emphasize material discussed since the midterm, with about 2/3 of the questions related to those topics. As with the midterm, there will be a combination of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, matching or short answer, and some short essay questions. You will not need a blue book. The following questions are meant to guide your studying. The questions on the final will be taken from these and similar subjects, although will not be word for word repetitions of the review question (i.e. if you memorize the answers to all of these doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll do fine). There is the possibility though, that some of the short essay questions may be slightly modified versions of these questions… Remember, we test on comprehension, not whether you can regurgitate back the answers to these questions. In general, you should be able to write a short paragraph about each key concept or topic, giving specific examples where appropriate. Make sure that you understand the figures in the lecture notes, and the evidence supporting key concepts, models, and theories. In addition to the lectures, you are also responsible for the concepts covered in the discussion sections. Also, remember to review the midterm and, in particular, those questions that you got wrong. We can guarantee that there will be some repeat questions from the midterm. In life, one must learn from one’s mistakes, lest they be repeated. 1. What evidence do we have for other planetary systems? 2. Are other planetary systems all like our solar system? Explain. 3. Why haven’t we found other Earth-like planets yet? Does this mean that we are unique? 4. What is a hot Jupiter?
