Summary: • Earth started hot and chemically differentiated as a natural consequence of accretion Moon formed by giant impact of a planetary embryo on proto-Earth • Impact occurred about 4.5 Ga, probably only 50 Ma after CAI formation! All the terrestrial planets have metallic cores Further planetary evolution dictated by a planet’s ability to lose heat (which is related to its mass)
