Unformatted text preview: Elizabeth Merlino Reflection Paper 2 October 15, 2011 Elizabeth Merlino Colonization is the answer to all the problems. Many social scientists believe that this is a true statement; however, we need to look at who colonization really benefits. We have to ask, why do we colonize? What do we want the outcome to be? Why do we educate the citizens of other cultures to become colonized, and what do we even teach? When colonization occurs, a lot of the time culture is lost. Assimilation to another culture is forced and the people originally from the area are upset and angered. Why educate? There are many reasons that we educate. The common denominator between all the reasons is to raise their standard of living. The issue comes from this. There are some cultures that are very happy to be living the way that they are currently living. Just because they do not have technology and the newest and “nicest” things, compared to the American standard, they are not unhappy. They have their culture. They have their social values and beliefs standard, they are not unhappy....
