English Writing 112 February 24, 2010 Anne Bello A Small Place The essay, A Small Place , written by Jamaica Kincaid, is an essay that describes the voyage that the Author went on. The story is written in second person and gives a lot of description. In this short essay, the author describes the trip and all of the obstacles that she runs into. When thinking deeper about this essay, one may realize how he or she feels, which could be relaxed, but it changes as the context is introduced more and more. The context of the story conflicts with the syntax of the story creating an intriguing pseudo world. In this essay, I will talk about how the syntax of each sentence, creates emotion and how writing this essay was a form of therapy for Jamaica. By reading A Small Place , one can learn how the syntax of each sentence can emote a feeling that the context isn’t giving itself. The way that this story was written, one would never know that the author herself was a native to the island of Antigua. She was born there, and was returning after many years of living in white culture. One would think that returning to this culture would make her feel at home, but this is not the case. She feels like a tourist in her own birth land. She was separated from the culture for a very long time and grew up in a typical Northeastern American home. She lived in Antigua until she was sixteen, and upon the return, doesn’t understand all of the culture and customs. She writes the story and uses the syntax of each sentence to emote her feelings, even though she doesn’t say it in the context itself.
