Both of these countries were highly respected, and so the little people had to choose which country they wanted protection from. So from there they accepted their policies and practices for protection. During this time both sides had developed and deployed nuclear weapons. Both US, and Russia wanted to keep one another from attack of a nuclear weapon. For instance is Russia set one off the US would do the same but launch a few more off at Russia. I guess it is a good thing that no one did launch nuclear weapons off, because in the end there probably would not have been anyone left to survive such an attack....
